This Year's Project: Making Their Temporary Home Even Better

About Our Organization

Our organization is committed to keeping pets safe, happy and healthy while they wait to be placed in a forever home. Since 1983 the McCook Humane Society has provided a temporary home for puppies and kittens, as well as adult dogs, cats and any temporarily homeless pet. We are dedicated to finding permanent, loving homes for abused, neglected, and abandoned animals in Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas. We strive to be as low kill as possible and give them every opportunity to find forever homes. Our motto is: Saving just one pet won't change the world, but surely, the world will change for that one pet!

Current Project: Making Their Temporary Home Even Better

We are constantly upgrading and updating our facility. Because of your past help and support, we've come a long way, upgrading our computer and software system, front building ramp, stainless steel sinks & tubs, and so much more. We have big plans for the future. The building is older and showing it's age, we've been updating and upgrading, and we invite you to come check out the progress so far. We are now in the stages of replacing our temporarily homeless friends' "housing", starting in the cat room and working our way through to the main kennel. We're doing more building maintenance. Along with the challenges we've faced with providing continuing care for the temporarily homeless in our care as we always do, we are seeing a continuing surge in animals that need more medical attention and socialization (requiring longer housing and manpower) while still managing to meet our own and neighboring communities' needs. We do all of this while continuing in our constant mission of providing the best care possible for the temporarily homeless furkids in the community, reuniting the lost with their families, promoting responsible pet ownership and offering assistance to those in need, just to start.

With Your Support... We Change Their World, One Furchild at a Time.

Past Projects

  • Change Their World, One Furchild at a Time

Our biggest current project is to continue to upgrade our facility. This past year hit us hard, as it has everyone. Along with the challenges we've faced with providing continuing care for the temporarily homeless in our care during this unusual time, we've had a surge in multiple animal rescues and animals that need more medical attention and socialization (requiring longer housing and manpower) while still managing to meet our own and neighboring communities' needs. Which brings us to our other main and constant project, which is education, to help with Responsible Pet Ownership and to help animals receive proper care, and forever homes. We do all of this while continuing in our constant mission of providing the best care possible for the temporarily homeless furkids in the community, reuniting the lost with their families, promoting responsible pet ownership and offering assistance to those in need, just to start. Pictured is "Trooper", a dog who was stabbed multiple times and miraculously survived the ordeal. He was adopted into a loving home.

  • Until They All Have A Home

Our project, our mission, remains the same. To find forever homes for all of our temporarily homeless furry friends housed at the McCook Humane Society. Each pet available for adoption is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, comes pre-spoiled and is ready for you to fall in love with and adopt!
