The McCook Community Foundation Fund was formed more than 20 years ago as a way of "Looking Forward and Giving Back" to McCook and Southwest Nebraska. Since its inception, the McCook Community Foundation Fund has given more than $400,000 in grants to local organizations and community projects, ranging from leadership programs at MCC to childrens theater programs with SWNCTA. This year alone, MCFF will donate more than $150,000 in grants.

MCFF oversees several local scholarships for graduating seniors and is active with young leaders in the community through the Youth Change Reaction and the Southwest Leadership Institute. MCFF also oversees nearly two dozen sub-accounts for local organizations including the Community Chest, the Drive-In Movie Project and the YMCA.

MCFF helped develop Big Give McCook event, bringing expertise and experience from the other affiliated funds, and continues to feel Big Give McCook and the Community Chest are vital to a successful community. MCFF Advisory Committee members feel Big Give McCook is a great way for everyone to have the chance to give - and support - their local charities and non-profit organizations.

All donations to MCFF during Big Give go toward the general operating fund, which is used by the fund to support and maintain the fund's activities in the community.

Current Project: MCFF: Connecting, Collaborating, Convening and Communicating

Many people may think that the McCook Community Foundation Fund just raises money and gives away grant funds. But MCFF is much more than that.

MCFF works with other organizations to help them achieve their goals through sessions to re-evaluate their vision, mission and values. MCFF brings groups together to make everyone stronger, including the Southwest Nebraska Big Give and the McCook Philanthropy Council. And MCFF believes in working with others because as the saying goes: go alone, go fast; go tother, go further. And MCFF will continue to make McCook and Southwest Nebraska an even better place to call home.

Donations to MCFF during the Big Give will go toward the general operating account, to help MCFF continue to help others connect, collaborate, convene and communicate.

MCFF began in 2001 because Floyd Hershberger saw a need for a foundation which served the community of McCook. Since then, MCFF has grown to be much more. Yes, MCFF still raises funds for its endowment, which uses the interest payout to provide more than $150,000 in grants every year.

But MCFF is also now a convenor, bringing together the McCook Philanthropy Council with a focus on Five to Thrive - leaving 5% of assets in planned giving to a hometown. MCFF is a collaborator, working with the Wellness Initiative to bring healthy and recreational projects to McCook including a new swimming pool, ballpark improvements and pickleball courts. And MCFF is a connector, bringing resources and groups together such as BreakAway discovery center and the McCook Arts District.

Donations to MCFF's general operating account help keep Floyd's vision alive, help Southwest Nebraska to grow and thrive and help make McCook an even better place to call home.

Help McCook continue to grow and thrive by supporting McCook Community Foundation Fund's general operating account.

This past year alone, MCFF has hosted a Hometown Summer Intern, showing that young people can pursue their career goals - large and small - from McCook. Check out the Make It Happen Here videos created by intern Lexi Gross, highlighting those "making it happen here."

MCFF supports projects ranging from a hydroponic grow-house at McCook High School to the creation of Norris Alley, as a unique gathering space in McCook. MCFF also created the COVID-19 Response Account this past spring, in meet the local needs during the pandemic. By combing a grant from MCFF with donations from MNB Financial Services and Graff Charitable Foundation, more than $120,000 has been distributed to the community.
