This Year's Project: Organization & Facility Improvements

About Our Organization

The mission of the Young Men’s Christian Association of McCook, Nebraska is to organize human, financial and material resources to encourage the spiritual, physical, mental, and leadership growth of any individual within a Christian atmosphere.

At the YMCA of McCook, our cause is strengthening the foundations of our community.  Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to ensure everyone, regardless of age, income, or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

We offer a wide range of programs and activities for the whole family. Of course, there are fitness classes and exercise equipment to keep our members healthy and physically fit. But more importantly, the YMCA provides a fun, social atmosphere, where you will be missed if you skip a swim class or a weight-lifting session.

The YMCA is the major provider of youth and adult recreational activities, as well as the leader in providing health enhancement programs and opportunities for the citizens of Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas. The YMCA also provides a safe facility where area youth can hang out while being supervised or participate in organized activities.

The YMCA offers a variety of youth sports such as basketball and soccer, adult sports such as pickleball and volleyball, and wellness programs for all ages including indoor cycling and cardio dance. The YMCA continues to be the leaders in the aquatic field offering progressive swim and lifeguard lessons, as well as providing time for high school swim team and competitive youth swim teams.

The values and skills learned early in life are vital building blocks for a successful adulthood, and we believe all kids deserve a strong start and a safe place to grow. Parents trust the Y’s Youth Development programs to support and nurture their children from infancy through the teen years and help them become strong, capable and engaged young people.

Current Project: Organization & Facility Improvements

In our ongoing quest to serve our members and the community, the YMCA of McCook is committed to provide quality experiences. In doing so, our organization has identified necessary improvements to be made in our Aquatics, Youth Development, Fitness, and Sports Departments. These include equipment upgrades as well as facility updates and renovations. In order to remain relevant in our industry and to provide exceptional service to our members and guests, it is critical that we work to improve our amenities in an effort to continually promote healthy and active lifestyles.

Thanks to contributions from our neighbors in 2022 we were able to complete numerous facility improvements and implement new programming. Changes this year included:

·             A new layout and equipment for the weight room that is more conducive to training and members needs

·            A new space just for youth to socialize, relax, and do homework in the YMCA called the Youth Activity Center

·            TRX straps in the downstairs Cardio Room for new TRX classes and trainings

·            The planned replacement of all four basketball goals and structures for the safety of our guests, members, and employees

·            New storage in the Wellness Center for member belongings

·            New programs introduced in 2022 that we plan to become an essential part of the McCook YMCA include the Father-Daughter Dance, 45 Days of Summer Challenge, Youth Competitive Basketball, Youth Wellness Training, and numerous new group exercise classes and times.

We need your help to ensure the McCook YMCA can continue to transform lives and strengthen our community. It is with your contribution that we can continue to improve our facility and create new programming in 2023 for McCook and surrounding areas.  We thank you in advance for your contributions and commitment to help us make the McCook YMCA a pillar of our fine community for generations to come.

The YMCA staff is excited to offer high quality weight training equipment to our members. The upgrade supplies equipment for all levels of fitness and allows members to achieve their fitness endeavors.

In May 2022, we renovated the golf simulator room into the Youth Activity Center. Our staff and Board of Directors identified a need to have a space for youth age 10-18 years old that they could take ownership of and use at the YMCA. The Youth Activity Center is equipped with a ping-pong table, foosball table, XBox 360 with Kinect System, board games, and furniture to allow youth space to socialize, relax, and do homework. The space is continuing to evolve and change.

In November 2022, we plan to replace all 4 basketball goals and structures in their entirety. The basketball goals are original to the building and are 40 years old, for the safety of our members and employees they will be replaced prior to the start of the Youth Basketball season.

Other accomplishments in 2022 include the addition of storage for member and guest belongings in the wellness area, new equipment on the Wellness floor, and the addition of TRX straps in the downstairs cardio room. We are also constantly expanding our program offerings for youth and adults. New programs in 2022 included the Father-Daughter Dance, 45 Days of Summer Challenge, Youth Competitive Basketball, Youth Wellness Training Program and many new group exercise classes and times.

With your support, we can continue to serve McCook and surrounding areas. We thank you in advance for your donations that help make the McCook YMCA a pillar of our fine community.

    Project Wrap Up

We hosted our first annual Healthy Kids Day program, a Y national event, to celebrate youth being physically fit, active, and engaged in our community. Area businesses and organizations such as Community Hospital and the McCook Police Department helped make the event a success with over 100 attendees! Youth enjoyed healthy snacks, games, face painting, and even a hula hoop contest in the day event!

In spring 2021, we rebranded and reopened our Child Care Department as Youth Development to further support our mission of fostering growth and learning in youth from birth to age 18. This project involved a complete remodel of the Youth Development Room into a space for kids in Kindergarten-5th grade to learn, grow, and thrive. We also welcomed a new Youth Development Director, Saraya Flaig, to our YMCA team. We launched a successful Summer Day Camp program that had over 40 participants and a full roster. We rebranded our After-school Program to ensure youth had an opportunity to successful academically, socially, and physically. Our Youth Development Director looks forward to many opportunities to improve.

In August 2021, we welcomed a new Fitness Director, Vincent Allen to our Y team. Vincent helped reshape our fitness department by adding light weights, kettlebells, pylometric equipment, and other fitness equipment to the wellness floor to create a functional fitness space. He also launched our Personal Training program and our complimentary Wellness Coaching program.

This year at the Y we celebrated the success of new programs such as the Kid's Night Out series, Boo Bash, Healthy Kid's Day, personal training and wellness coaching, as well as many new group exercise classes and times. We plan to continue to add new programs and improve the YMCA in 2022.
